I completely dug how Gus Van Sant captured Harvey’s story. It was refreshingly creative and yet maintained the integrity of the facts. It felt like he was given liberty to tell his story with the flair and orginality Harvey would have wanted. In light of Proposition 8 being recently overturned I think this is an important film to watch. The religious climate hasn’t changed too much from the 70’s. The Right-Wing-Holier-than-Thou US contingency is still determined to prevent the liberties and rights the GLBT community deserves and needs. Being both a tragic and triumphant reminder of how far they’ve come, MILK serves to keep hope alive that one day civil discriminition because of sexual orientation will cease.
